Zanae participates in Alternatives, Inc. Youth Ambassador Program, which helps to provide opportunities for young people whose families may not be able to afford paid enrichment programs. This program is designed for middle and high school aged youth and builds their leadership and life skills, increases their self-esteem and self-worth, engages their families, and provides young people civic engagement opportunities and connection to community. The Youth Ambassadors meet with State Senators and Delegates, Local officials, School Board members, school staff, and other community leaders. Youth in this program meet to discuss issues impacting youth in our community such as virtual learning, quality afterschool programs, and youth mental health issues. The Youth Ambassadors then develop solutions to these community issues and present their ideas to key stakeholders.
Zanae says, "Being a part of this program really showed me that I can do anything, it just requires effort and some help along the way. We’re making real change, and that excites me, cause that’s all I’ve ever wanted to do.” This is a group which gives young people knowledge and skills for academic and career success and prepares them to use their talents throughout life. In addition, this program helps young people, and their families feel connected to our community, imagine possibilities, and feel empowered to make a change in their own life and the lives of others.
